Frequency, quantity and signs to back off, to introduce a retinol product gradually.

Muraqqum article. The products mentioned are for sale in our store.

In 30 seconds

  • Start slowly: two nights a week, a pea-sized amount for the whole face, on dry skin.
  • Only increase the frequency if the skin is comfortable. If it stings, peels or becomes red, back off.
  • Use sunscreen every morning. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless medically advised.

Who is it for

For you if you are an adult, are going to use a cosmetic with retinol for the first time and want a clear and cautious plan.
Maybe not, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have reactive skin or a diagnosed condition, or take medications for the skin: speak to your doctor or dermatologist first. This article deals with over-the-counter cosmetics, not prescription medications.

What retinol is (and what it is not)

Retinol is a form of vitamin A used in cosmetics. It is part of a group of derivatives, retinoids. It is useful to distinguish:

  • Retinol and derivatives (retinol esters): over-the-counter cosmetic ingredients. The EU has set maximum concentration limits for retinol and esters in cosmetics (Reg. (EU) 2024/996), so the label of new products includes a warning about vitamin A. [to be located: text of the regulation on EUR-Lex, to confirm limits and application dates]
  • Retinal (retinaldehyde): another derivative, also used in cosmetics.
  • Prescription retinoids (for example, tretinoin): they are medications. Only with medical indication and supervision.

A cosmetic with retinol does not have the same function as a medication. In this article we only talk about cosmetics: how to introduce a product gradually and comfortably.

Before you start: three checks

  1. Read the label. Look for the concentration, if indicated, and the warnings. Follow the product instructions, which take precedence over this guide.
  2. Do a test. Apply a small amount on the curve of the arm or behind the ear and observe for 24 hours. If there is redness, itching or stinging, do not use.
  3. Have sunscreen. Dermatologists recommend broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day, and even more so when using a product with retinol, because the skin becomes more sensitive to the sun. [AAD; source 1]

The six-week calendar

This calendar is a general and cautious guideline, inspired by the usual recommendations of dermatologists to start slowly. It is not a clinical protocol. Everyone has their own pace.

Week Frequency Notes
1 2 nights (for example, Monday and Thursday) Pea-sized amount for the whole face. Moisturizer on top, if you want.
2 2 nights Keep going. If the skin is comfortable, continue; if not, repeat the week.
3 3 alternating nights (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) Only if there was no stinging or peeling.
4 3 nights Keep going. Many people stay here, and that is fine.
5 3 to 4 nights Optional. Increase only if the skin is stable.
6 Evaluate Choose the frequency that your skin tolerates well. You do not need to reach every night.

Golden rule: repeating a week is not failing. Going up only when the skin is comfortable is what makes the plan sustainable.

The step-by-step of each night

  1. Cleanse the face with your usual, gentle product.
  2. Dry well. Some professionals advise waiting a few minutes before applying, so the skin is not damp; damp skin can increase penetration and irritation. [to be located: source for the waiting time; until then, general guidance]
  3. Apply a pea-sized amount. Distribute over points (forehead, cheeks, chin) and spread. More product does not give more results and increases the risk of irritation.
  4. Avoid the eye contour, the corners of the nose, the lips and any irritated area.
  5. Moisturize. You can apply a simple moisturizer on top.
  6. In the morning, cleanse and use sunscreen. Without exception.

Techniques to soften

  • Sandwich: moisturizer, product with retinol, another thin layer of moisturizer. Reduces direct contact and can make the introduction more comfortable.
  • Short duration: apply and remove after some time, only if the label indicates it.
  • Alternation: retinol nights alternating with simple hydration nights.

If you are using other strong actives (acid exfoliants, for example), do not use them on the same night. One strong active per night is a rule of caution.

Signs to back off

Reduce the frequency, or stop, if you have:

  • persistent stinging, tingling or tightness;
  • redness that does not go away;
  • peeling or very dry skin;
  • itching or swelling.

Take a break for a few days, moisturize and go back to a previous step. If the symptoms persist or are intense, stop and speak with a healthcare professional.

Common mistakes

  • Starting every night. It is the most common cause of irritation.
  • Using too much product. See step 3.
  • Forgetting the sunscreen.
  • Mixing several actives on the same day without care.
  • Expecting a quick result. Cosmetics do not promise deadlines; the effects, if they exist, vary from person to person and take time.
  • Using during pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical consultation.

Warning

Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless medically advised. Use sunscreen during the day. Medications (such as prescription retinoids) only with medical indication. This information is general and does not replace the opinion of a doctor or pharmacist. If you have reactive skin, take medication or the symptoms persist, speak with a healthcare professional before changing the routine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use retinol in the morning?

The usual practice is to use it at night and do sun protection in the morning. Always follow the label instructions.

Can I use it with vitamin C?

Many routines put vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night, so as not to combine them. If you are going to use both, introduce one at a time.

What if the skin peels?

Reduce the frequency, moisturize and give time to the skin. If it is intense or persists, stop and consult a professional.

How long until I see a difference?

There is no guaranteed deadline. The results vary from person to person and depend on the product and regularity. Avoid relying on promises of days.

Can I use it in the summer?

You can, with daily sunscreen and reapplication, and avoiding strong direct exposure. If you are going to spend many hours in the sun, it may make sense to pause; talk to your dermatologist.

What to take

If you want to start the routine with the essentials, see the face collection, with the sunscreen and the moisturizer preceding any active.
